Air Quality

AROMA instruments deliver key capabilities that allow regulators, municipalities, consultants, and communities to rapidly collect highly accurate chemical data in the field. The unique capabilities of the AROMA technology enable high temporal and spatial resolution VOC measurements needed for mobile monitoring and high sensitivity speciated measurements required of fixed site monitoring. Mobile Monitoring

The AROMA platform is ideally suited for mobile monitoring with real-time monitoring and reporting. AROMA is easily transitioned from a stationary monitoring site to running in a vehicle in less than 30 minutes. No specific mobile monitoring build out required. We currently recommend a 12V, 300AH lithium ion battery for 24 hours of continuous mobile monitoring capacity. AROMA instruments have been used for plume identification and tracking, large-area ozone precursor monitoring, virtual fenceline monitoring, leak detection, and indoor air quality studies. When a plume is detected, AROMA can be rapidly switched from RapidScan (5 second measurements) mode to LabScan mode to provide identification and quantification of the specific plume components.

Stationary Monitoring

The ease of use and few infrastructure requirements for AROMA systems enable long-term, unattended operation at fixed monitoring sites. A few different operating modes are available depending on the requirements of the site: 

  1. Continuous speciated measurements - every 10 minutes depending on sampling volume with parts-per-trillion detection limits
  2. Continuous small molecule identification and large molecule classification measurements - every 5 seconds for methane, water, ethylene oxide, aromatics, alkanes, dienes, etc. at parts-per-billion detection limits
  3. Triggered monitoring - RapidScan measurements taken every 5 seconds until a threshold is reached and the system is switched to LabScan mode for speciated measurements.


In collaboration with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, AROMA-VOC was set up next to their dual column GC-FID for a 30-day, unattended, uninterrupted, side-by-side comparison. The results from this comparison for benzene and toluene are shown in the Proof of Performance document in the Resources section. The systems were found to be in excellent agreement with an R2 value of greater than 0.97 and 0.99 for benzene and toluene, respectively.

Community Monitoring

Community air quality monitoring can be organized by government agencies (local, state, and federal), environmental consulting groups, non-profit organizations, and environmental justice community groups. Within these organizations is a broad range of expertise in air quality monitoring and VOC detection. AROMA was designed from the ground up for ease of use and does not require any operator expertise. Combined with the low infrastructure and consumables requirements and analyzer mobility, AROMA can be used for a wide range of community monitoring applications including: “hot spot” identification and tracking, chemical manufacturing and commercial sterilizer facility monitoring, long-term pollutant monitoring, oil and gas well emissions monitoring, etc.

Vapor Intrusion

AROMA-VOC is an ideal tool to monitor vapor intrusion of trichloroethylene with ultimate sensitivity (< 50 pptv) and mobility. AROMA-VOC is compatible with Tedlar bags and stainless steel canisters for off-line sample analysis. AROMA-VOC has been used to detect hot spots at Superfund sites and identify vapor intrusion pathways in sewer headspace. In side-by-side studies, AROMA-VOC show excellent agreement with EPA TO-15 method by GC-MS and a field GC-MS (see Performance Validation document for more details)
